Click the speech bubble icon on the upper right corner of Itsy. A text area will appear. By default, typing a message here and hitting "Send" will send a regular tweet. To send a DM, start your message with the letter "d". Then type a space, the username of the person you'd like to address, and another space. For example, to send a DM to sfsam, you'd type "d sfsam " (without the quotes) and then the content of your message. When you start a message like this, Itsy will start counting characters after the space following the addressee's username and the "Send" button will change to "Direct".
